Chapter 6
Birds
From our living room picture window, we would both marvel at the various birds visiting our two front lawn trees. Blue Jays would grab our attention. Marlene loved all birds except for crows. I did my best to put them in a positive light with stories about their intelligence and so forth but to no avail.
Where the variety and appreciation were at its utmost was in the backyard in summertime. We would watch them all fly over to and from their unknown destination with the occasional bird making a stop for us to admire. From sitting on a fence post to landing on the ground looking for their next meal, it was indeed something we both appreciated as we got older.
Marlene would see her father if a Robin starred at her for any amount of time. Hi Dad, she would exclaim towards the Robin.
But the most fascinating and loved of them all was the Hummingbird. Marlene would be on the lookout for hours while sitting on the swing. Looking towards the bird feeder, her patience would be rewarded by their approach and taking of turns in using the liquid of water and sugar she had prepared. There was something magical and comforting for her in receiving their visits.
Perhaps I could go as far as stating that they were her closest connection to this higher power we all seek answers from while on this earth. To see the beauty in such a small creature was Marlene’s way in expressing and experiencing that unknown from the divine we all strive for.
