Chapter 26
Garden
We must have a garden she would say when we first met. With encouragement from her father during his visits on Crandall St; the tradition continued when I came on the scene, and I would reluctantly help of course all the while as she tried to instill upon me the importance of it all.
Marlene would say, “I just love to see things grow”
We both agreed it made no economic sense but that was never the point.
To say a garden was a big part of Marlene’s mental health would be an understatement. Along with that sense of purpose it was all about that experience of monitoring its progress and as I said seeing things grow.
Every year a new experience. Let’s try this and see what happens she would say.
The weeding aspect became increasingly difficult and as much as I tried to help it did appear that I did not have that special touch.
I understood how walking around her garden nourished her soul and know she now enjoys the greatest of them all.
