Chapter 56
Social Justice
Another area of big interest in later years.
Her empathy for those less fortunate grew through the years. Marlene’s deepening concern for social justice issues, especially homelessness and those suffering from food insecurity, became a defining aspect of her life. Advocating for policy changes to support the vulnerable populations. Marlene's unwavering commitment was driven by a profound sense of compassion and a desire to create a more equitable society.
She would occasionally donate to some worthy cause and let me know after the fact by shouting from her office, Hey Al, just donated to xyz charity. Great sweetie I would reply from the living room.
This aspect of Marlene grew through the years and is one of the areas I am most proud of.
Her views were shaped by what we saw in society in general but also acquaintances that struggle living day to day including a friend whose brother died making a fire in an abandoned building to try and stay warm.
