Chapter 49
Politics
Not a major point of interest for Marlene, however many discussions were had re various policy matters. Watching the news, one could not help but somewhat be involved. From issues about the economy and foreign policy, the issue which struck a chord included homelessness, food insecurity and the increase in the use of food banks and of course the ever-increasing challenges faced by the health care system.
I would enjoy our conversations that began with, “What do you think of that issue?” “Do you agree with what that guy just said?” “What’s your opinion on that?” and so on. As I would try to provide my opinion, I would try hard to see both sides rather than seeing things black and white. I believe we aligned almost perfectly as it related to most major issues. There was never a politically charged argument between the two of us.
I think it’s safe to say that while I was more of a centrist, Marlene aligned herself with those issues that were more social justice oriented. Not once did we question each other’s voting decision. That decision to vote I might add she took very seriously by being the one dragging me to the polling station.
